Here are some of my favorite boards. This list is still tentative and will adjust as I review all the games I have played. I suggest games that I think play very well, to include both the basic RISK(tm) style rules and the special rules. Special rules are very hard to get a good balance and have something playable. You will find that I am prejudiced against boards that have lots of connections between all the countries and no choke points. Sorry, it's just that I find those games to be more dice dependent and less strategy dependent.

  • World War II - World War II is a good game. It takes the whole world and breaks them into more continents than the standard RISK(tm) board. Warning - I suggest that you change the board so you have escalating cards. The board has a high amount of stability and can become deadlocked with three players without escalating cards.

  • World War II European Theater - This board has Europe in the World War II time frame. It is well done with a good balance between number of connecting countries and continental bonuses.

  • Narnia A nice board with the Narnia theme.

  • AMaze Me - The game is simple without a lot of strategy, but it is fun to play. It is a square grid maze and you get bonuses when you hold a continuous section.

  • N'yuhh - Decent graphics and good game play. There is a large island which is hard to hold and several smaller islands making it so you can get a foothold and build.

[edit] Games With Using Alternate Rules

  • Pyramid of the Sun - An interesting game. While it doesn't use boarder modifiers, you do have some one way paths. The game makes you strategize as to how to get ahead of your neighbor. There are a lot of neutrals that you must fight through in order to eliminate your opponent. Pay special attention to what makes up a continent.

  • Marathon - Marathon is based upon the ancient Greek battle of Marathon. It is blind-at-once play, and is best played between teams with one team playing the Greeks and the other team playing the Persians. The continent bonuses are unique, so place close attention.

  • City Raider - It is a map with terrain on it. Holding the high ground gives you a defensive bonus and aids in your attacks downhill. However, you gain no continent bonuses for owning the hills, only the cities, which can easily be attacked from the hills. Typically, giving defensive bonuses for armies on a hill can make the game go into stalemate, thus many revisions to minimize this.
