Open/Ranked Game Queue Limits

From WarfishWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

There are some boards that, when put into the queue for an open/ranked game, fill up very quickly. There are also some boards that ... don't. When an individual who happens to like one of the less popular boards decides to queue up a couple games in a row on the map, it locks down the open circuit for hours - I've personally seen in excess of 8 hours of a peak day dedicated to the same map so I'm sure even worse has happened. I would like to see some limits on what a single person can put in the queue.

Update Just put in a limit to only allow 2 open games in the queue of a particular game board (created by any host). Hopefully this goes a bit of the way to helping the "flood effect" you've seen and also help make sure there is a variety of games available. --Steven 22:42, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
This could have been done 2 per game host... but seems like then there may still be a flood of a certain board.. i see your point might be more clear / fair if it is done on a per game host basis rather than 2 in the queue period. I know I've been addicted to the FTT board. if I was blocked from starting my 2 ranked games in the morning I'd be annoyed. --Steven 22:45, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Please view and sign Cald's petition to implement a fix for the queue. The petition, as it stands, is simply a call for a fix. Discussion on what type of fix might be implemented can be found below.

[edit] Discussion

1. I agree there is a problem with that. While a limit might be useful, I think we could get around the main issue by not limiting the number of games you can join to one. Instead, all the games you "qualify" for would be available to you in a list. Thus, if there are 4 games that you could join, you see all 4. Also, if there is a game that people don't like, then the person who started it would see that many other games get listed and started while their game is just neglected. Thus, they know it isn't popular.
This would also let people who like "fringe" games (e.g. only a few people like them, but they like them a lot, such as BAO), to list games and find that 5% of the warfish players who also like those games. This would avoid having everyone wait until that fringe game *finally* starts.

2. There are two variables I think could be used as a limiter: the map and the player.
Limiting the queue to holding only 1 game on a particular map would be confusing and frustrating to other players, so I don't think that would work.
As strict as it sounds, I'd like to see a limit set for a single person to be allowed only 1 game in the queue at a time. If a person is on and playing "live" then there's no reason they can't put another in the queue as soon as their game starts up. If they're not playing live, then they have no reason to put more games in the queue.
Or, to help those people who insist that they don't want to keep starting games on a one-by-one basis, set up a queue for the queue; a personal queue. Allow a person to set up as many games as they want. One will go into the queue. When that game starts, the next game from that individual's personal queue will get in line behind everyone else who set up a game while the first waited for players. This gives someone all the convenience of the current method, while protecting the rest of us from long waits. -Reich

3. There is a very simple solution to this whole Game Queue issue. Instead of a direct link to a new available game, create a link to a general "Queue" page which shows all available games. To keep things simple, have this "Queue" page show which board the games uses, and whether it is an Open or Ranked game.
Keep everything else the same since it all currently works. Only have the "Queue" page link appear when their are games available, and keep the player rank stats for Ranked games; I love that feature.
Simple and effective. - Doom 21:26, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

4. Fair enough, Doom. That sounds like a great way to make everyone happy. I like it. -Reich

5. I like Doom's idea too. --Cald 05:26, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

6. "Wiki Bump" Something needs done about this IMO, too many games are getting started that aren't the intended size due to people Joining and then Declining. This is occuring on single games in the Que, meaning not when it is 2+ of the same map in a row. There either needs to be a penalty for players doing this (i.e. they can't join or start a Ranked game for 6 hours), or whatever the intended size of the game needs to still be completed before it starts (a Que page could solve this problem though as well). --Yertle 18:19, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
