[edit] Couple questions?

  1. Did you setup the Category system for the Boards? I've been talking to Step.On.Me about categorization for bugs/features do you know how to add Categories?
  2. Is there a "how to add a game board to the game directory" document? I couldn't find it, might be handy so that future additions follow the category system, etc.
Thanks for the responses. I added a How to add a game board to the game directory link to the top of the Game Boards page that links to the discussion and I also added a blurb about Categories at the bottom so people will know some basic info about the Categories system you guys have set up. Please update it if it can be explained more clearly. Thanks for setting that up.

[edit] Don't get a card unless you captured a non empty territory

I just put a first cut of this option on the site. Just thought you might want to know:

[edit] About Pyramid of the Sun / Ranked Games

Just so your wiki messages and email (and previous feedback).. everything actually sends me email. I just un-ranked-mod your newest mod so all should be well again. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how that happened. Did you do anything special with your latest mod? I'm guessing that there is a bug in the code somewhere that inadvertently flips the "ranked mod" flag... but I'm not sure where to look for it.. this hasn't happened before. Sorry about the delay in responding to you... --Steven 00:40, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Update. I think I may have fixed the problem. Did you happen to use the "copy mod" feature to create that newest mod on Pyramid of the Sun.. i noticed that the copy mod feature was copying everything including the "ranked mod" flag. Should be fixed now. Also, I'll take a look into the per country fog you've suggested. --Steven 00:49, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tags

Here is another idea for you to think about. I like the categorization work that you've been working at on the wiki. As a separate navigation system though I'd always wondered about "tags" for boards on Warfish.net.. not sure if they should be user submitted or designer submitted but.. all the boards on Warfish.net could also have tags associated with them.. like "abstract", "large", "historic" etc. Then a web2.0 tag cloud could be created on Warfish.net that provides another alternate way to browsing boards on WF. It is independent from your categorization efforts on the wiki, but just thought I'd mention it to get your thoughts on the idea since it seems related. --Steven 08:51, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Board Categories

I noticed you created a category for Terrain maps, that is cool. I was reading about the Categories feature of MediaWiki, I guess it builds that index automatically once the boards are all added to that category. Do you think it makes sense to make a category for all game boards that way the main Boards index doesn't have to be manually updated. --Steven 07:55, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

I created ten categories, not just one, and I'll probably create a few more before I'm done. I like the main index the way it is even though it has to be manually updated, since being able to list the game designer and brief description is a nice feature. Every game should be put (at minimum) into one of the size categories too, though, and the size categories are members of the Game Board Types category, so an automatic index already exists, just two levels deep instead of flat. Good enough? --Red Baron 05:00, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

I requested this under the categories discussion tab, but I figured since you seem to be the one who keeps up with the categories that I could ask you as well. Is there any way we could get a Series category or subcategory added? I have a series of constellation boards as well as a possible second series (of which Carbonfish-20 is the first installment) in the making.

Personally, I don't think a category becomes useful until there at least half a dozen (and preferably several dozen) wiki pages that fit that category. If more designers start series, a category for that might be a good one. (I intended Battlefield: Marathon to be the start of a series, but number two in the series has proven tough to finish.)--Red Baron 00:00, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Also, is there a way we could have a Universal Games subcategory added to Game Board Regions? Again, I think my constellation boards would fit under this category. Thanks! --Step.On.Me 23:17, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

CRogue has recently added some region categories to the wiki. It might make sense to create an "Outer Space" region if we have enough boards that fit that category. There are quite a few boards set in outer space on the site, but most don't have wiki pages so far. --Red Baron 00:00, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Game board discussion page

I just took a look at it and that is a great idea to setup a sort of guide to adding games there. On a side note, I was looking into the Category feature in MediaWiki which seems like it can build an auto index (instead of the manual alphabetical index that we currently have there). Basically creating a Category:Game Boards and add all the current game boards to it.. then I believe that the MediaWiki can create some kind of auto generated page that looks like our current "organized by alphabet" page. --Steven 01:33, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Game board guides stubs

I noticed that you created some game board stubs. That is a great idea! I wonder if there is a way for me to programmatically trigger that or perhaps put game boards in their own namespace with that as the default empty/stub template. That way if I link over to them from warfish.net the page will look like the one that you created. --Steve 10:14, 15 September 2007

[edit] MediaWiki Templates

That was my first time using templates, I'd read about them in the MediaWiki documentation when I was setting up WarfishWiki, but hadn't had any good place to try it out. Btw, I just realized that you don't have to put "Template:" when referencing the template, i.e. {{{Game Board Nav Red Baron}}}. Btw, this is the tutorial I found when I was searching for how to do it. --Steven 16:30, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Game board guides

I enjoyed checking out your game board guides that you created in the wiki. I had no idea that Fishwar had so many versions. Also I was trying out some wiki features and experimented with some templates on your game board navigation. Hope that is ok. --Steven 22:42, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Game Design Plug-Ins

So, plug-ins are a pain to write, but so is double checking your work. I wrote this one to check if the per-location max army limit was set correctly. It isn't pretty, but it works.
