"Vacation days" is a tool to allow conscientious warfish players to communicate with other players on Warfish when they go on vacation so they know why he/she is slow at taking their turns (or not taking their turns at all). Here is the way it works:

  1. I'm going to go on vacation for a week in Hawaii and probably won't be able to have access to the net.
  2. I finish off all my current turns on Warfish
  3. I go to Settings > Account and select 7 days vacation and type in "I'm in Hawaii, suckers!"
  4. On all my games this message will display so that everyone else on the site knows why I'm slow to take turns (or not taking turns at all).
  5. After the 7 days expires the vacation message automatically disappears again.
  6. If I want to review my vacation history I can check the Details Tab on my profile.

Some other things to notice about "vacation days".

  1. You can't be booted when you are "on vacation"
  2. You have a limit on the number of days you can be on vacation. 14 days total in the last 12 months. (28 days for Plus Members)

This is a new feature so please let me know if you have any suggestions/comments. This page is probably the best place to comment so we can keep the discussion all in one place. You can also send feedback as usually as well --Steven 02:35, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

The use of vacation days would be nice. I noticed people are really not patient. this feature could allow, for example, 6 weeks of vacation time for paying members, and 2 weeks for non-paying members. during this vacation time, players could not be booted, and a message would say "I am on vacation. thank you for you patience. I'll be back on... "

Even if this wasn't used to block booting, if it at least had some way to let people in every game/tournament see that a player is on vacation without them having to post a message in each one, that would be useful. Something like a link that says "Away" next to the player's name in the Details page, that would let you click it to view their out-of-town message, would work nicely. --Wombert 17:40, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Implementation idea. I'm thinking about implementing this as follows. Please let me know if you have any feedback on this:

I was thinking of something purely account based. You just go to your account settings and there is a place to put a message (i.e. "I'm in Hawaii, suckers!") and select 1-5 days. You can "go on vacation" however many times as you want, however, you can not have any games when it is "your turn" when you click on the vacation button in other words you have to be caught up when you click on the vacation button. When on vacation you can not be booted and your message displays on the site.

So the only concern would be "what happens if someone wants to try to be a jerk and abuse the vacation system?". The worst thing you could do is try to go on vacation continuously back to back, but since you have to be caught up on your turns when you do this you'll still have to take your turns at least every 5 days. Also, I could add in some throttling on this so you can't go on vacation more than a certain number of times in a certain period of time but hopefully it wouldn't come down to that since it would be nice to be able to go on a 2 or 3 week trip and be able to "go on vacation" back to back during that time. --Steven 19:39, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

This is a great idea, and one that's been on my "wish list" since shortly after I joined Warfish. I would suggest, however, that you double the limit from 14 to 28 days per year. As long as you can only select 7 days at a time and you have to be caught up on your games before you can select "go on vacation," the potential for abuse is still low. Another potential way to avoid abuse would be to limit this ability to Plus Members. PennHoosier 12:57, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
I can understand that there are some who would like to abuse this feature to keep from being booted, and I appreciate the limitations that have been placed on it. However, I think the 7 days limit needs to be revamped or removed completely, and here's why.
  • In one of my 2-player team tournies, one of the teammates went on vacation for July 4th and decided to use this feature. He was going to be gone from July 2nd through July 10th, stated as such, and yet was only able to select the 7 days max, which ended up automatically shutting off this feature on the 9th.
  • Well, this caused problems for me as the tournie host because at the time I didn't realize there was a 7 day limit, which led me to believe that since his vacation message was no longer showing, that meant he was back. Eight hours after it was automatically shut off, I booted him because I thought he was back and just didn't take the time in those 8 hours to take his turn. (For further info, check out the tournie page here or the specific game here.)
  • I realize now that I could have checked his vacation history on his profile, but how many tournie hosts would actually take the time to check everyone's profile for such things, especially in the larger tournies?
Just something to consider. Thanks! --Step.On.Me 04:42, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

  • It's still possible to create games while on vacation. I don't think that should be possible. I'm also curious if wait times while on vacation adds to your average turn time (I suspect it does, which is sad after how much work I put in to getting my turn time down to 1 hour (which is itself pretty sad)). --asm

I absolutely LOVE this feature - BRILLIANT! Any chance to make it so we can enter days in the future? In other words, I know I'm leaving Sunday, for 5 days, but it's only Friday. It'd be cool if I could put that in now. Also, I disagree with asm that users on vacation should not be able to create games or tournaments because sometimes vacationers have access (albeit intermittent perhaps) to the Internet. --Maelstrom 15:14, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

I think I found a bug. My profile shows that I was on vacation for 5 days in June, but says I've been on vacation 0 days.--Maelstrom 00:35, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

I think this is a great idea, however I am going to be out for an entire month. I am currently in a few team tournaments and I don't want my teammates to lose because I took a vacation. Is there any way to delegate my turns to my teammates? --RAM June 26th, 2008
